I served on board the USS Long Beach from 1972 to 1977, working on
various electronics systems including the SPS-33 radar.
My personal experience with it was that it basically never worked for more than a few minutes at a time as a radar
-- though the transmitter half worked fairly reliably.

In one memorable incident, we "lit up" a shadowing Russian "trawler"
with the SPS-33 radar in continuous wave (or "searchlight") mode.
Someone at the time told me it was transmitting a megawatt, though I have no way of knowing that for sure.
We did cause some excitement on the Russian boat, with crewmen coming out and shaking their fists at us,
presumably because we took out the front ends of their receiving equipment.

I spent a lot of time working on the hardware and software involved
with transmitting SPS-33 data to the NTDS (Naval Tactical Data System) on the USS Long Beach.
The intent was to transfer realtime positioning data from the radar to the computer system, but we were never
able to make that work during my time on board.
The best we ever did was to inject a bunch of spurious targets into the NTDS system...

The SPS-33 used a pair of Univac-1230 computers, with a shared
memory cabinet (core memory, of course).
There were also several cabinets of electronics using some of the early MILSPEC and extremely unreliable MOS
integrated circuit chips -- a nightmare system with gazillions of field changes and absolutely no chance of functioning,
since no one on the ship (including me!) had any clue how it was all supposed to work...

SPS-32 was the horizontal panel. It used P-band and provided 2-dimension
search data: range and bearing.
Norman Friedman, NAVAL RADAR (USNI, 1981), wrote that each SPS-32 panel contained "18 columns," a phrase
that could mean "18 antennas." "Each antenna has a beam pattern roughly 7 degrees by 50 degrees; detection
ranges of up to 400nm are claimed with 1.5MW (20-micro second pulses, pulse repetition frequency 200)."

SPS-33 was the vertical panel. It used S-band (ECM F-band) and provided
3-dimension data: range, bearing, and altitude.
SPS-33 really only tracked contacts and needed data from the SPS-32 to know where to scan for a contact.
Friedman say SPS-33 used "frequency scanning in one dimension and phase-switching in the other."
ENTERPRISE and LONG BEACH mounted different versions of SPS-33.

Aboard ENTERPRISE each SPS-33 radar panel had a magnetron that broke
down after a few hours of use.
All the electronics were built in the 1950s and were practically experimental.
If a panel worked, it could track one air contact at a time. Even when the radar panels worked, a unique and
inoperable computer crippled SPS-33 as a weapon system.
The ships's radar officer told me in 1978 that the SPS-33 had never been fully operational since the ship was built.
Nobody, including the manufacturer, knew how to fix the computer.
It did not matter because the SPS-33 was not connected to the ENTERPRISE's tactical data computers.

USS LONG BEACH mounted a modernized version of SPS-33 with a
functional computer.
She shot down two North Vietnamese aircraft at very long range over land in 1967 At such long range she
must have used her SPS-32 to detect the target aircraft, and perhaps used her SPS-33 to track it, but I know of no
details.
Her SPS-32 and SPS-33 operated reasonably satisfactorily until they were removed about 1979.
